Hohenberg Castle, Salzburg, Austria, 2010
While searching for new materials, I went for a sculpture workshop in Salzburg and was given a studio inside an old medieval fortress, the Hohenberg Castle. My immediate reaction was to do an installation around the idea of fortification, to emphasize this element of keeping people out as I found parallels to it in the social systems of all cultures. This way I could question the caste system, nationhood, racism and sexism, all in one.
When i saw the magnificent view of the open sky, and the mountains from there, I shifted tack and the work became about  passage, movement from inside to outside, escape. I found the perfect site for my voice in a doorway, which led to the open ramparts where the natural elements came together very powerfully to heighten the feeling of liberation. I have been working for some years on the notion of death or erasure and in the mystic tradition a doorway can also be used to symbolize the transition from one world to another. The poem I wrote and recorded, points at communal conflict, post-colonial identity, transition and the deep connection between humans and nature.
